Shift allowances

Article 15

With effect from 1 April 2004 revised shift allowances will apply to all employees, whose basic rate of pay is determined in accordance with Article 5 of this agreement. Employees shall be paid, in respect of all hours worked, an allowance for alternating shifts at 10% and for rotating shifts at 16% of the basic rate of pay. For the avoidance of doubt these allowances should be calculated before the application of plussages.

A) Conditions

A shift allowance is payable in addition to the scheduled rate of pay for day workers. It is to be taken into account for holiday and sick pay but must not be taken into account for calculating:

  1. overtime
  2. the payment for a shift on a public or extra statutory holiday
  3. the payment for Saturday and Sunday work

B) Leisure Group

The provisions of this Article do not apply to Leisure Group Workers the Department of Economic Development (VMGT) and Department of Education and Children (NSC) who have separate arrangements.

C) Airport Firefighters

The provisions of this Article do not apply to Airport Firefighters employed by the Department of Infrastructure who have separate arrangements with effect from 1 November 2004.

D) Heritage Railway Staff

The provisions of this Article do not apply to Heritage Railway Staff employed by the Department of Infrastructure who are covered by a local agreement dated 27 July 2015 (under review).
