Capability procedures

Capability refers to the skills, ability, aptitude and knowledge an employee has in relation to the job they are employed to do.

Lack of capability in most cases leads to unsatisfactory performance, which in turn is likely to lead to problems for both managers and staff.

Where capability is an issue, public servants are subject to a capability process, which is aimed at giving staff every opportunity of improving over a period of time. In such cases, appropriate action should be taken to examine the circumstances and give support to enable them to improve to the required standard of competence.
