Activ8 Scheme
Secondary Subject Shortage Scheme
These payments are aimed at providing assistance to secondary school teachers who are relocating to the Isle of Man to take up main scale posts in shortage subjects. These payments are not available to any teacher who is in receipt of a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) allowance.
The arrangements allow for the payment of up to a maximum of £500 per month towards the actual cost of renting living accommodation, for a period not exceeding 8 months from the date of appointment.
Payment will be made through the normal monthly payroll process on receipt of this application. The application must be supported by evidence of the rental cost being incurred and must be countersigned by the employee’s Headteacher.
If the recipient of these payments leaves the post before the end of two terms, or any lesser agreed contractual period, they will be liable for repayment for all monies received under this arrangement.
Secondary Golden Hello Policy
The secondary Golden Hello policy will apply in the following way in the 2023-24 academic year (e.g for first Golden Hello payment in the autumn term of 2023).
- All teachers who have successfully completed their statutory induction (or equivalent), and have a permanent contract in one of the Isle of Man’s five secondary schools, will receive consecutive Golden Hello lump-sum payments of £2,000 at the beginning of their 1st and 2nd school years in teaching following the completion of the induction period (usually 2 years). This will amount to a total payment of £4,000 over two years.
- The first Golden Hello lump sum payments will be made EITHER in the Autumn term at the start of the next school year following successful completion of the statutory induction period, OR (if the statutory induction period is completed mid-academic year) during the term immediately following the successful completion of the statutory induction
- Teachers will be entitled to these payments regardless of:
- Whether their statutory induction period (or equivalent) was completed in the Isle of Man or elsewhere
- The subject(s) that they teach
- Where they undertook their Initial Teacher Training (ie England, Ireland etc)
- Whether they are Manx, Isle of Man workers or new residents
- Golden Hello payments will be liable to deductions for income tax and National Insurance
- Golden Hello payments will be subject to the following repayments if a teacher leaves the Department of Education, Sport and Culture’s employment:
- Before completing the second year – £2,000 repayment
- Before completing the third year – £2,000 repayment
