Civil Service / NTNSP
By the civil servant | |
(Posts in Pay Spans 1 to 5) Any length of service | 4 weeks |
(Posts in Pay Spans 6 to 9) Any length of service | 3 months |
(Jesp Posts) Any length of service | 3 months |
For the purpose of calculating the last day of service the 3 month period will be treated as 13 weeks (ending on the last working day of a week).
By the Commission - All permanent appointments | |
Less than 4 weeks' continuous service | Nil |
Between 4 weeks' and 4 years' continuous service | 5 weeks |
4 years' or more continuous service | 1 week for each year of service, plus one week (up to a max of 13 weeks) |

As specified in the terms of the appointment.
M&CW
The length of notice required to be given to terminate employment is as follows:
By the Employing Authority
Period of Continuous Employment | Minimum Notice |
2 weeks or more but less than 2 years | 2 weeks |
2 years or more but less than 12 years | 1 week for each year of continuous employment |
12 years or more | Not less than 12 weeks |
By the Employee
Period of Continuous Employment | Minimum Notice |
1 month or more but less than 2 years | 1 Week |
2 years but less that 4 years | 1 week for each year of continuous employment |
4 years or more | 4 weeks |
MPTC
Minimum notice to be given by the employer (Department of Health or Department of Social Care) to the employee:
- Bands 1 to 4 – 4 weeks
- Bands 5 to 7 – 8 weeks
- Bands 8+ – 12 weeks
With the exception that if the employee has more complete years of continuous employment than that given above then the statutory notice period will apply.
